The Willamette River
flows through downtown Portland Oregon and each year (February-May) it
supports a healthy return of 50,000 to over 100,000 Spring Chinook Salmon.
The Columbia River also near Portland receives, on average, nearly 1,000,000 springers
each year.

Portland spring salmon
are wonderful eating and contain some of the highest amounts of healthy
Omega 3 oils of all the species of salmon.
Spring salmon put up a
tremendous battle many times leaping far into the air. In Portland
trolling spinners and
bait is one of the most popular methods to fish for these salmon.
Anchoring
and plunking bait wrapped lures can also be productive at times. April is
typically one of the top months to catch these spring Chinook on the
Columbia
and Willamette rivers near Portland.
Peak fishing:
Willamette River (Portland area) - April through May. Willamette River
(Salem area) - May through July, depending on water conditions. On the

Willamette River Spring Salmon
Of the five species of
Pacific salmon, the
Chinook and Coho are the most
important to anglers. The two are often found in the same waters and
pursued in much the same way, but the Chinook is the larger of the two
and highly prized among anglers. The Willamette River in
Portland is a prime
area to target Chinook salmon. When hooked, Chinook like to slug it
out, while Coho's are acrobatic and quick. The Columbia supports several
species of anadromous fish that migrate between the Pacific Ocean and fresh
water tributaries of the river.

steelhead, all of the genus Oncorhynchus are ocean fish that migrate up the
rivers at the end of their life cycles to spawn.
Chinook are also
known as the king salmon or spring salmon. Chinook salmon
are powerful swimmers that migrate hundreds of miles up northwest rivers to
their spawning grounds, and they can grow huge. The rod-and-reel world
record was taken in Alaska's Kenai River in 1985 and weighed 97 pounds,
4 ounces. Most fish caught by Portland Oregon anglers, however, range from 15 to 40 pounds. At the end of
a fishing line, Chinooks are absolute brutes - hard-running, stubborn fighters
that will give you all the challenge you can handle, and sometimes more.
Starting in March, the
Spring Chinook are the most desired of all the fish for their excellent
taste. The average Chinook salmon weighs 15-20 pounds. Then in August the
Upriver Brights make their way upriver, they are hard fighting and a joy to
catch. By mid to late September, Fall Chinook are present. The largest
of the salmon species, the Fall Chinook, will certainly get your heart
pounding. Coho Salmon enter Oregon rivers in September, a great fish to eat
and catch.
Willamette River
salmon fishing is a major tourist draw for Washington and Oregon
fishing guides and once you experience Willamette River salmon fishing just once
you will not want to ever leave this productive Oregon river. Salmon fishing
